A Fable
(Hardcover - 1980)

From Jason and the golden fleece to the latest Wall Street saga of millions made and lost overnight, man's lust for gold has been a favored subject of the storyteller's art.  Now James Kavanaugh lends his considerable talent to the theme.

His fable concerns a remote mountain village called Harmony where life is peaceful and well ordered.  Nobody is rich and nobody is poor, for each citizen contributes his particular skill to the general benefit of the community.

Then one day an outsider named Oudeis arrives from the city of Prosperity, beyond the Explorer Mountains.  Although outsiders are not welcomed in Harmony, Oudeis is allowed to remain because winter  is on its way and he would be unable to cross back over the mountains.

To express his gratitude for the many kindnesses shown him.  Oudeis makes a gold ring for Raven,  the blacksmith's daughter.  What happens to the peaceful community of Harmony as a result will come as no surprise to anyone buffeted by inflation.  But how the elders of Harmony manage the cure the community's gold fever is a surprise and provides a gratifying conclusion to this beautifully told fable.
